Farne Islands accommodation and coastal bases

Farne Islands accommodation is best considered alongside the journey to the boat. Seahouses is the harbour for trips to the islands, while Bamburgh, Alnwick and Holy Island offer different starting points for exploring the coast. Edinburgh can also be a base for a guided coastal day out. Choose the place that fits the rest of your itinerary as well as the time you need to reach a departure.

First decide whether you want a boat trip, a castle visit, a walk or a mixture. A boat trip and an island landing are separate decisions: a cruise can remain on the water, while a landing depends on the season and conditions. Read the boat trip guide before choosing a date, then check travel to Seahouses for rail, bus and parking considerations.

Accommodation categories listed in the local Seahouses directory include self catering, bed and breakfast, hotels, hostels and camping or caravan stays. Use those as a starting point for your search and check the individual property's current arrangements, location and booking terms directly.

Seahouses for the harbour

Seahouses puts the departure harbour at the centre of your planning. Check your chosen boat's meeting instructions and allow time to collect tickets before departure. If you intend to land on Inner Farne, the boat ticket and National Trust landing arrangements are separate. Even National Trust members collect a stamped landing ticket after collecting the boat ticket, with membership shown as required.

Being near the harbour makes it easier to organise the morning, but weather still shapes the trip. The skipper decides whether conditions permit a landing, and a trip may continue as a cruise if a landing is impossible. Keep your plans flexible and take layers, waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes. For a landing, closed shoes are needed for the disinfectant footbath and bags must be closed and supervised.

Bamburgh for castle and coast

Bamburgh is a useful choice if the castle and coastal scenery are as important to you as the boat. The castle has a long building history, from its early origins through later rebuilding. Its own car park is separate from admission. The Bamburgh Castle guide explains the visit; the castle is closed from 9 to 13 November 2026, with reopening announced for 14 November.

In the village, the RNLI Grace Darling Museum tells the story of the rescue from the Forfarshire and displays the rescue boat. Pairing a museum visit with a coastal walk gives you another way to explore when planning time ashore. Check the museum's current opening arrangements before setting out.

Holy Island, Alnwick and Edinburgh

Holy Island offers a distinct setting, but the causeway is covered by the tide twice daily. Check safe road crossing times for both arrival and departure, and allow a safety margin. Road times do not apply to the marked route across the sands. Lindisfarne Castle and the Priory are separate visits with separate tickets; see the Holy Island guide when organising your stay.

Alnwick is another base for combining the coast with a castle visit. Its regular 2026 season ended on 20 October, so check the current calendar before arranging your itinerary. Edinburgh suits travellers who prefer a city base and a guided coastal excursion. The excursion featured here starts in Edinburgh and includes transport and a driver guide; entrance fees are extra. It is a day trip, not a room booking or a boat departure from Seahouses.

Match your base to your plans

Compare the exact address with your planned departure point, especially if you will use public transport. Alnmouth and Berwick are rail access points for onward travel, while Chathill has limited services. If driving, allow time for parking before you go down to the harbour. A separate day for the coast can make it easier to accommodate a change in conditions without assuming that a landing or animal sighting is guaranteed.

Accommodation questions

Where should I stay for a boat trip?

Seahouses is the harbour departure point. Compare your accommodation location with your boat's meeting instructions.

Can I combine Bamburgh with the islands?

Yes. Plan the castle and boat separately, and check the castle calendar and boat conditions.

What should I check before staying on Holy Island?

Check safe causeway times for both directions and confirm the arrangements with your accommodation.
