Things to do in Farne Islands and on the coast
Things to do in Farne Islands waters begin with a boat from Seahouses, but the coast offers a wider itinerary too. Look for seabirds from the water, plan a seasonal island landing, walk towards a castle ruin or spend time in Bamburgh. These experiences have different access conditions, so choose the ones that fit your dates rather than assuming one ticket covers them all.
The islands are a National Nature Reserve. Puffins are most associated with May to July, while grey seals can be seen around the islands at other times. Wildlife moves freely and sightings depend on the animals and conditions. The season guide explains the wildlife calendar, and the boat guide compares the ways to go out from the harbour.
For a landing on Inner Farne, check the current status and arrange the boat and National Trust landing requirements separately. Weather and tides affect the skipper's decision. A cruise is another way to see the islands from the water without planning your day around going ashore.

Coastal walking
The Northumberland Coast Path runs between Cresswell and Berwick upon Tweed. You do not need to tackle the whole route to enjoy the landscape: select a section that suits your time and check the return journey before setting out. Local circular walks link beaches, villages, castles and farmland. Wear suitable footwear and carry layers and rain protection for changing coastal conditions.
For a walk with a historic destination, start at Craster and head towards Dunstanburgh Castle. The route to the medieval ruin is about 1.3 miles over partly rough ground. Parking is outside Craster rather than in the village. Check the castle's current opening arrangements separately if you want to enter, and keep dogs on a lead.
Bamburgh Castle and Grace Darling
Bamburgh Castle rises above the coast and has a history that spans early settlement, Norman building and later restoration by William George Armstrong. Explore the Bamburgh guide for practical details. Its closure from 9 to 13 November 2026 and announced reopening on 14 November are worth checking against your itinerary.
In Bamburgh, the RNLI Grace Darling Museum tells the story of Grace and her father, who rescued nine survivors of the Forfarshire in 1838. The collection includes their rescue boat and personal belongings. Check opening arrangements before your visit, as volunteer availability can affect them. The island history guide connects the rescue with Longstone Lighthouse.
Holy Island and Alnwick
Holy Island has its own rhythm because the causeway is covered by the tide twice a day. Check safe road crossing times for both legs and leave a margin. The road times do not apply to the marked route across the sands. Lindisfarne Castle and Lindisfarne Priory are distinct places with separate tickets; use the Holy Island guide to plan them.
Alnwick Castle brings another chapter of the region's history and film connections. It was a location for the first two Harry Potter films, and its visitor offering describes film tours and broomstick training. The regular 2026 season ended on 20 October, so consult the current calendar before including a visit. Compare coastal castle excursions on the castle trips page.
Vera filming locations
Fans of the television series can consider a guided Vera themed excursion from Newcastle. Transport and a guide are included. Check the individual itinerary and departure details when booking, and allow for the journey to the Newcastle meeting point. This regional day out is separate from a Farne Islands boat trip.
Hadrian’s Wall and inland Northumberland
For a separate inland itinerary, see Hadrian’s Wall and inland Northumberland.
Make space for the weather
Build your days around the experiences you most want, then leave room for changing sea conditions. Inner Farne landings run in the April to September season and depend on the skipper's decision; Staple Island landings are closed in 2026. Take closed shoes for the Inner Farne disinfectant footbath, keep bags closed and supervised, and give wildlife space. These practical steps help protect the islands while making your trip easier to organise.
