How to get to Farne Islands boats
Knowing how to get to Farne Islands starts with Seahouses: boats leave from the harbour on the Northumberland coast. Reach the village by road or combine a train with onward bus or taxi travel. The boat is a separate part of the journey, so choose a departure and work backwards from its meeting instructions rather than planning only to arrive in the village.
Alnmouth and Berwick upon Tweed are useful railway access points. Chathill is closer but has a very limited service, so check whether its trains and your onward journey actually match. See the boat trip guide for the difference between a cruise and a landing, and the accommodation guide for coastal bases.
Allow time to park, reach the harbour and collect tickets. For Inner Farne, collect the boat ticket first and then the stamped National Trust landing ticket at the harbour trailer. Members also collect a ticket and show their membership. A landing is subject to conditions and the skipper's decision.

Our take
A private coastal excursion includes an agreed pickup and travel by minivan.
Train to Alnmouth or Berwick
From a station, plan the remaining journey to Seahouses separately. Trains connect Newcastle and Alnmouth, while Berwick is an option for travellers coming from Edinburgh. Compare train arrival times with onward transport and the boat's meeting time. A rail ticket to the coast does not by itself arrange the journey from the station to the harbour.
Check the return as carefully as the outward route. Leave a margin between boat arrival and your onward connection, particularly when weather may affect the sailing. If you are also visiting Holy Island, its causeway crossing has its own tide dependent timetable and should be planned separately.
Public buses to Seahouses
The X18 route connects Newcastle and Berwick via places including Alnwick and Seahouses. Consult the timetable for your actual date and stops, and check any changes or connections before travelling. Do not assume that every train arrival has a matching bus or that a single through service fits your itinerary.
For Holy Island, route 477 links Berwick and the island via Beal. Coordinate its service with safe causeway crossing times. The crossing is covered by the tide twice daily; the road timetable does not apply to the marked route across the sands. Plan both directions rather than using the outward crossing alone.
Taxi and transfer from Newcastle Airport (NCL)
For a taxi or prearranged transfer from Newcastle Airport, agree the destination, pickup point, luggage and total terms before travelling. Give the driver the address of your accommodation or the harbour meeting point and leave a margin before the boat. If your flight arrival changes, contact the transfer provider about the revised pickup.
The private coastal excursion shown here has pickup at an agreed address and is a guided day out. Check its pickup arrangements when booking; organise an airport transfer separately if that is what your journey requires.
Car hire and parking
A hire car collected at Newcastle Airport can give you flexibility to combine Seahouses with Bamburgh or Alnwick. Check collection and return arrangements, insurance terms and the space needed for passengers and luggage before reserving. The B1340 serves Seahouses from the A1; check your route and current road conditions before setting out.
There are non National Trust car parks in the village centre and limited harbour parking. Allow time to find a space, read the local signs and walk to the departure point. Parking at Bamburgh Castle is a separate arrangement from its admission; do not assume a village or harbour ticket covers it. For a longer coastal itinerary, the things to do guide brings the main stops together.
Find a rental car at Newcastle Airport (NCL) on Economybookings.
At the harbour
Bring your booking details and follow the meeting instructions for your boat. The National Trust recommends booking in advance, although day tickets are also mentioned. Choose closed shoes for an Inner Farne landing and keep bags closed and supervised. Inner Farne's landing season is April to September; check the current status before travel. Staple Island landings are closed in 2026. A year round cruise does not itself give landing access.
